Greg Hassler
Mules Sideline Reporter
It’s
game week for Mules football as they get set to meet Minnesota
State – Mankato on Thursday, Aug 28th at Walton Stadium/Kennedy
Field. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. and our airtime is 5:45 on
1450 KOKO and 98.5 The Bar. You can also listen world wide on
warrensburgradio.com and beginning at kickoff on 90.9
The Bridge. My name is Greg Hassler and I am the sideline
reporter for Mules Football. Each week you will hear from either
Shawn Jones, the voice of the Mules; Joe Moore, home color man;
or me. This week I will tell you what I have observed at Mules
fall camp.
Ever year during fall camp I am
probably the most optimistic fan in town, always believing if we
catch the right break or not have the key injury, we have as
good a chance of the winning the league as anyone. As we all
know, that has not come to fruition over the past several years.
After attending a few practices and scrimmages, I am here to
tell all Mules fans to get excited - this is a very good, very
deep, very skilled football team. The place to start is the
defense. Everyone in the league is talking about how Washburn’s
defense is going to be the best in the league, but I really
think this Mules defense will be as good if not better than the
'Bods. The defensive line is the best in years from end to end.
It is anchored by 6-3, 270 lb. All-MIAA defensive end senior
John Wood, who lead the team in sacks last year with 8.5. Add in
players like Layne Kreter, Derek Lampkin and Tyler Nay and you
have one solid D-Line.
There are three seniors at the
linebacker position led by All-MIAA performer Adrian Singletary;
this is a fast, athletic, hard-tackling group. At defensive
back, the Mules are deep and strong. Keep an eye on #20, Randy
Shepard -- he is a lock down corner that has a chance to play on
Sundays.
On offense the Mules will be as a
good as ever. It all starts up front with a talented and deep
group of guys. Three starters return on the O-Line for the
Mules, including two All-MIAA players in Craig Harrison and Mike
Gunselman. They will be charged with opening holes for an
incredible one-two punch at running back. Second-Team All MIAA
runner Glen Milner returns for his senior season; he will be
joined in the backfield with junior transfer Anthony Stewart, a
very quick and elusive back.
The Mules are deep and strong at
wide receiver. Guys like Tim Richmond, Adam Parks, Damond Berry
and Edgar Givens all return for the Mules making this a strength
of the team.
Eric Czerniewski will once again
quarterback the Mules. He has looked great in practice, and he
is very comfortable in this new offense brought in by new
offensive coordinator Charlie Stubbs.
Combine all this talent with a
great coaching staff and seven home games, and you can see why
we all should be excited about the upcoming season. Again, make
your plans now to be at the home and season opener Thursday,
August 28th at 7 p.m.
