Getting to Know The Mules:

Justin Montague
MulesCentral Feature Writer

SEPTEMBER 29, 2008 - DB Ryan Nesbitt was a standout for the Mules in 2007, and despite not being a starter, he recorded 34 tackles, 2 forced fumbles and one recovery. He was a star at Columbia's Hickman High School, helping his team win a state title and a few district titles along the way. His father is the defensive coordinator Gregg Nesbitt, and the brother of Kellen Nesbitt, who played for years with the Mules.

When did you start playing football? What about it made you start?
I started playing flag football in the Columbia Youth Football league when I was in first grade. I always knew I wanted to play football, mainly because my father at the time was the head coach of Hickman High School. I just fell in love with the sport.

What was your favorite play or memory of your high school career?
My favorite memory of high school far and away came against Rockhurst HS in the state semifinals. We we're up 10-7 after trailing the whole game. They had driven to our 8-yard line with about 30 seconds to play in the game. It was in front of a packed house at Rockhurst, a team we had lost to already that year. They lined up for a field goal and we blocked it and I recovered it to seal the win. We went on to win the state championship that year.

What made you decide to come play football for Central?
My sophomore year, my father came to coach at Central Methodist University, where I was playing. After the season he took the job here at Central Missouri. I needed a change, so I followed him here as a walk-on.

What is the best thing about playing at Central?
With out a doubt, it’s the teammates that I have. It’s a tremendous group of men that I get the privilege to work with everyday. It makes coming to practice really worth while.

Is it harder for you being an NCAA athlete on top of your schoolwork?
It makes a difference. Being an athlete is like having a full-time job. Your daily schedule is very busy, but I wouldn't have it any other way. It's really taught me the importance of prioritizing and time management.

What is your favorite play or memory at Central?
I would have to say that every week has been produced a new memory for me. I feel that everyone that is apart of this team is not here by accident. So this team this year, is my favorite memory as a Mule.

What gets you fired up before games?
To be honest, it doesn’t take much to get me excited to play a game. It’s the fun part, games are so far and few between that I would be foolish to waste an opportunity. As far as preparation, I usually try and find a quiet place to sit by myself and get in the right frame of mind to play.

What would we find on your iPod?
Ha Ha, well you find a lot of classic rock and what I like to call chill music. Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson, 311, Cold Play, Everclear, Guns and Roses, Led Zeppelin, stuff like that. I’m a big music lover though.

What is your personal goal for the year, or what would you like to accomplish?
My goal this season is without a doubt to win a conference championship. I feel winning this conference sets you up for success. I love playing in the MIAA because every week you play a great opponent. Personally, I just want to do whatever my job is to help this team be successful in our team goals.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
To be honest, I change my mind everyday. Some days I see myself taking a high school coaching job and teaching because I’m tired of having no money! But I also see myself getting my masters somewhere and taking a graduate assistant position. Either way, I would like to be coaching football somewhere -- giving back to the sport that has been so great to me.
